“Ooooh my goooosh!” Miranda’s face puffed, and mascara ran down her cheeks. “I’m so sorry, Analyn. So, so sorry. I was going to hold in my emotions, but Rick just called. He dumped me.”

Analyn’s stomach knotted, and it wasn’t because of Miranda’s love emergency. The rehearsal dinner was in twenty minutes. The dove delivery guy was due to arrive at any minute, and Corey…where was Corey? Analyn glanced outside the restaurant window, looking for her fiancé.

“Rick said he was feeling too much pressure to get married. I asked that man about marriage one time. Okay, more than one time. I didn’t know it would scare him off.” Miranda sniffled.

“If it scared him off, then he wasn’t the man for you.” Analyn sat next to Miranda at the teakwood head table. Corey had booked the entire restaurant for dinner. She wasn’t even gonna ask how much it cost.

“You’re right. If a conversation scared him off, he wasn’t worth it.” Miranda wiped a tear from her cheek, and a dribble of snot stretched from her nostril. Gross. That was not very Beyoncé-ish.

“Lemme get you some tissues.”

“My life is ruined. You’re so lucky to have someone who loves you and wants to make that lifetime commitment.” Miranda rested her head on the linen tablecloth.

Had Corey ever actually said he loved her?

Hmm. Not that she remembered. Didn’t matter. He loved her, or else he wouldn’t have proposed. “I’ll be back with those napkins.”

She headed to the entrance of the restaurant as a black Mercedes pulled into view. Analyn exhaled. Corey. Analyn stepped through the door to meet him. His side windows were tinted, but she could tell he was on the phone. She stood outside the passenger door and waved.

No response. Must’ve not seen her. Analyn waved harder.

Corey did a double take, hung up, and rolled down the automatic window. “Hey, babe.” His electric smile thrummed through her.

“Hey. Glad to see you. It’s just me, you, and Miranda. Still waiting on the others.”

“Your grandmothers aren’t here to run the show yet?”

Analyn laughed. “No. I’m running the show.”

He stepped outside the car and stood tall, like a warm cup of cider on a freezing cold day. When Corey walked into a room, every single body warmed up.

Dark, thick lashes framed eyes the color of the amber earrings he’d given Analyn as an engagement gift. The tailor-made pinstripe suit hung perfectly on his long athletic body. Ebony skin. Chiseled cheekbones. L.L. Cool J lips. But it was the tense set of his jawline—as subtle as a shadow cast in a dimly lit room—that gave her pause.

“You okay?” she asked.

“Sure am.” He pulled her close, and Analyn inhaled his scent, a divine mixture of soap and musk.

“How about you?” Corey asked. “How are you feeling?”

“We’re getting married, so I’m feeling great,” Analyn said. “But you seem nervous. What’s up?”

“Nothing.” He gently cupped her chin in his hand. “You know I’m committed to you, right?” His tone sounded off.

“Of course.” They walked inside the warm foyer of the high-end bistro, and Analyn told him about the doves.
